Local Scene: Friday on Noggin
Thursday, December 04, 2008

Kelsey Friday, still best known here as the former frontwoman for Brownie Mary, has taken the next step in her new career as a children's music star.

The video for "Afraid Parade," a song from the debut by Kelsey Friday and the Rest of the Week, is being screened on Noggin (channel 131 on Comcast) in between normal programming.

The video shows Friday and her colorful band addressing normal childhood fears in fun, wacky style. The video was shot in an Aspinwall house by Mark Fallone of New Perspectives.

That's ace producer and guitarist Rick Witkowski playing the Ringo role in the white lab coat.

You can see the video on Noggin, or at www.kelseyfriday.net.

100 YEARS OF SLIM

• Happy birthday to Thomas Hoyt "Slim" Bryant, who turns 100 on Sunday.

The Dormont resident is a country-western legend and leader of Slim Bryant and the Wildcats, an institution here on radio and television in the '40s and '50s.

Bryant doesn't perform much these days, but he did release a new CD just last year. At the time he told the PG, he still does daily calisthenics. Must be working.

Hear more about Bryant, along with some of his music, on the "Believe Your Ears" podcast.

HE'S A STEELERS FAN

• Rolling Stone ran a piece on Girl Talk in the last issue saying that Gregg Gillis, who is the laptop star Girl Talk, "began performing as a college student in Cleveland in 2000."

The article never even mentioned Pittsburgh. So, now Cleveland is getting credit for Girl Talk?

The reference wasn't really even true. Gillis perfected the Girl Talk concept as a student at Case Western in 2000, but he started playing here at the Millvale Industrial Theater in 1998.
