So maybe you're not so keen on pulling on your oven mitts and baking Christmas cookies. But we bet you enjoy eating them. Fortunately, two local cookie-related events can help feed that holiday addiction.
Lawrenceville's ninth annual "Joy of Cookies" shopping/cookie-eating tour, which kicks off today and runs through Sunday, offers those who shop its Butler Street corridor, along with 43rd and 44th streets, a taste of more than a dozen different cookies at 18 shops.
If that sounds like a lot of baking, that's because it was: In all, longtime cookie maker Bernadette Ogurchak and her staff at Heaven's Scent Pastries in Forest Hills cranked out some 900 dozen for the event.
In the past, tour coordinator Mary Coleman of Gallery on 43rd Street solicited cookie recipes from anyone and everyone. This year, the winning selection -- including chocolate pinwheels, salty oat cookies, cream cheese finger cookies, and sage-scented shortbread -- came from participating shop owners, who were asked to submit two of their favorite recipes "so we wouldn't get too many of the same thing," says Ms. Coleman. They'll also be handing out recipe cards, if you're so inspired.
And if mere samples won't suffice? A "cookie mall" bake sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Teamsters Temple, 4701 Butler St., will make it easy for you to take a dozen or two home. Even sweeter: All proceeds of this Lawrenceville Rotary-organized event benefit local community groups.
The cookie tour runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. For a map of participating stores, visit lawrencevillecorp.com. More info: 412-683-6488.
If you prefer your cookies all in one place or favor more ethnic delicacies, you'll want to check out the annual cookie walk from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 13 at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Whitehall. Along with ladylocks ($7/dozen) and homemade nut horns ($8/dozen), the Kolo -- or ladies group -- will be selling apricot and poppy seed nut rolls ($12) and apple strudel ($9) at the church. You can also pre-order them by e-mailing htcnutroll@verizon.net or by calling the cathedral, 450 Maxwell Drive, just off Route 51, at 412-882-3900.
