Elderly woman dies following Lincoln Place fire
Thursday, December 04, 2008

An 84-year-old woman discovered unconscious inside her smoke-filled Lincoln Place home last night died at UPMC Mercy, the medical examiner's office said.

The woman's name has not been released pending notification of family.

Firefighters found the woman in a front bedroom on the second floor after they were called to a small fire in the 1300 block of Leaside Drive.

The woman's son-in-law, who discovered the fire about 6:30 p.m., was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters said the fire was small and quickly extinguished. Fire Chief Darryl Jones said the fire likely started when a piece of furniture, possibly a couch, ignited on the second floor, although the exact cause was unknown.
