MLB Notebook: Reyes shut down for thyroid tests
Saturday, March 06, 2010

Mets shortstop Jose Reyes plans to have tests in New York after doctors in Florida discovered a thyroid imbalance.

Reyes will have tests Monday and it could take up to 48 after for doctors to receive the results. "We're going to be conservative," said Mets general manager Omar Minaya.

The thyroid is a gland in the neck that produces hormones that help control metabolism.

Doctors cleared Reyes to play after he took a follow-up blood test to one conducted during his physical. However, Minaya said team doctors in New York wanted to take a closer look and pulled him out of pregame stretching Friday.

"I know he wants to play bad, but he's going to play enough," manager Jerry Manuel said after the Mets' 4-3 loss to the Florida Marlins. Reyes appeared in only 36 games last season because of a hamstring injury.

Reyes said he felt fine and has not experienced any dizziness, fatigue or any other symptoms of a thyroid problem. He said he was anxious to find out what is happening.

"We're not talking about my leg, nothing like that, we're talking about my health," he said, "so I have to be concerned about it."

Mariners

Seattle shortstop Jack Wilson injured his right hamstring and left the game in Peoria, Ariz., after the third inning of the Mariners' 9-3 loss to San Diego. Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu said: "He actually did it on a play at short where he planted and threw it."

Yankees

New York Yankees designated hitter Nick Johnson missed his second game in a row because of a stiff lower back. Johnson was hurt during batting practice Thursday when his spikes got caught on the mats used in the cage.

Diamondbacks

Arizona right-hander Brandon Webb could start the season on the disabled list after offseason shoulder surgery. Webb, the 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner, has been disappointed with his progress.
